Martina Kraus

Martina joined Motu in August 2017, after completing a MA in political science at Free University Berlin, Germany and a BA in political science and law at Mannheim University, Germany. Her Master thesis looked at the relationship between natural resource discovery and interstate conflicts.

At Motu, Martina is working with Suzi Kerr and Catherine Leining in the environment team on issues of the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS). For example, she is looking into the forestry’s role in the NZ ETS and potentials for carbon offsets in the sector. Martina is helping with the organization of 4 expert roundtable workshops on thorny questions for a net-zero New Zealand.

During her studies, Martina worked in the climate department at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin, Germany. Prior to that, she was a student researcher and teaching assistant at the John-F.-Kennedy-Institute in Berlin. This work was particularly relevant as Martina was awarded a one year scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD) to study at the political science department of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA.

In her spare time Martina enjoys biking, playing beachvolleyball, rock climbing and exploring the outdoors. After her arrival in New Zealand, Martina became particularly interested in learning about Māori culture and te Reo.
